When Do We do Pond Clean-Outs

Most of our pond clean outs are done in late winter or early spring.  We like to do them just as ice is melting off natural ponds in the Hamilton County Area. You don't need to be home when we perform the service but if you wish to be, these are the estimated times for a maintenance job.  Usually small ponds are 1-3 hours, medium ponds 2-3 hours, and large ponds, 3-5 hours.  

This is What We Do for a Spring Clean Out

• Remove the water
• Powerwash the pond to get a lot of the dirt and gunk out of it
• Remove old plant material
  
• Clean the filters
• Clean the pump or install it if you had it removed during the winter
• Add the starter bacteria like Aquascape Cold Water Bacteria
• Do minor straightening of rocks that may have fallen out of place during the year
• Clean the underwater light lenses 
• Refill the pond

Fall Maintenance

You've made it through the season and wonder what to do with your water garden.  Can U Dig It Nursery suggests that you put a net over the pond from the months of October through November.  We suggest this so the falling leaves don't accumulate in your pond, causing lots of maintenance to remove them.  When we net a pond we put up a temporary supports that will hold the net above the water.  After the fall leaves have come down we then come back and remove this net and support structure.
